The ZYPPAH (pronounced Zee-Pah) is a relatively new type of Mandibular Advancement Device or MAD, firstly because of the way it looks, and secondly because of the approach it uses to reduce or even stop snoring.
Unlike the majority of anti-snoring products available on the market today it is sleek and stylish and uniquely for MADs is essentially two mouthpieces blended into one. That is, it uses tongue stabilization and jaw adjustment technologies to reduce or completely shut down the causes of your snoring.
This product is made of two varieties of plastic, but both are BPA-free and latex-free. It is 100% made and material sourced in the US, and it is cleared by the United States Food and Drug Administration.
Developed by Dr. Jonathan Greenburg, a former dentist who spent almost 30 years in the field, the device also benefits from him having spent the last decade studying snoring and sleep apnea.
Dr. Greensburg currently runs five ‘Snore No More’ centers throughout California where there is a focus on aiding snorers and curing sleep apnea.
Finally, having been designed by a former dentist, there’s no need to worry about this device damaging your teeth.
How the ZYPPAH works
Firstly: One of the major and most common causes of snoring is the vibration of loose tissues while sleeping. The Rx effectively solves this problem through the use of the Jaw Advancement technique. This tightens loose tissues around the neck and the jaw by holding the lower jaw in a forward position; it also results in an opening up of the airway in your neck.
Secondly: The ZYPPAH has a tongue-stabilizing strap. The tongue strap, or the “revolutionary z-flex technology” as per the manufacturer, is an elastic band that is located towards the back end of the device. The band holds your tongue in place, and conveniently prevents it from falling to the back of the throat and hindering or blocking your ability to breathe. Restriction of the air passage is also credited with a significant number of snoring problems, but the Zyppah helps reduce the possibility of this happening.
The ZYPPAH: How’s it Different?
The device, from a purely aesthetic point of view looks like the kind of snoring device that Batman would use. It is sleek, modern and stylish. It is also, please believe me, more comfortable than it looks. At first I wasn’t too confident about how the rubber band would affect ‘the wear’ but it was a misplaced worry. I quickly got used to it and had no comfort issues at all.
As with the vast majority of MADS it employs the ‘boil and bite’ technique to create a comfortable custom fit that uses an impression of all the contours of your teeth. Custom fitting the device is extremely easy:
- Simply drop the device into hot water
- Allow it to soften and then…
- Bite on the softened piece to make impressions of your teeth
- As the material cools down it will retain the impressions of your teeth
Once you go through the custom fitting process you can use the device as is and, as I did, have a comfortable experience.
Perhaps one problem with the custom fitting procedure is the lack of a recessed tray that usually guides the teeth to their correct positions. Even though the lack of the recessed tray is a slight glitch, this is not something you want to lose sleep over. Opt for a comfortable fitting of the device by following the detailed instructions provided. Make sure you use a mirror to help you get that perfect fit. Please do be sure to read the instructions. It also helps to have them on hand to confirm the steps you’re going through are the correct ones.
Although you need to give yourself about a week before you start getting used to it, eventually the Rx begins feeling like an extension of your mouth i.e. natural.
Many users have reported that it’s slightly uncomfortable at first, but it helped reduce their snoring problems tremendously once they were comfortable with using it and I can certainly second their claims. The device is genuine, easy to use and very effective.
If you have any fears about the comfort of the tongue strap or of it triggering your gag reflex, don’t worry. As I mentioned earlier I had certain reservations about it, but after trying out the device, I found that the tongue strap is actually very comfortable and not worth worrying about at all.
The ZYPPAH is comfortable, easy to use and can be adjusted according to a person’s needs. There’s not really much more you can ask of from a MAD, except for adjustability, which in my opinion is very important, and of course, a cost-effective price.
Price and Warranty
You can purchase one unit from the official website for $89.95. If you send it to a US address then shipping adds $9.95 to your bill, so it comes to a total of $99.90. International shipping at $18.95 sees the total come to $108.90.
So, is it worth the money? Well, although a real solid performer with its fantastic two-in-one approach to tackling snoring, my answer to that question is somewhat colored by the fact that other comparable devices are much cheaper.
The VitalSleep, for example, has a much better cost-feature-ratio coming in at an all-inclusive $59.95 for one, or $99.95 for two.
Although you do get two actions in a single product with the Rx it isn’t adjustable, and as a modern product for snorers to not have this feature takes away from its overall rating. I still really love the Zyppah, but for it to take the number one spot it’d have to have some built in adjustability because it’s adjustability more than anything else, in my opinion, that really delivers a higher level of comfort for the wearer.
So yes, it is pricier, but it is still an excellent option and I recommend you to at least take the product on a test run.
There is a possibility that your skepticism will turn into positivity after you experience how good the product is first-hand.
However, if you are still not satisfied with your Zyppah experience then you can always return it and recoup your expenses thanks to a 90-day satisfaction guarantee.
Pros and Cons
- Its two-in-one solution creates an extremely effective treatment to eliminate snoring for more people.
- Developed by a professional dentist who has invested decades of time into finding solution for the problems of snoring.
- Small and light it doesn’t have as bulky a presence as some other mouthpieces; this reduces its impact on the muscles in your mouth and neck.
- 100% sourced and made in the United States using high-end materials.
- There is a 90-day money back guarantee which gives plenty of time to adjust to wearing the mouthpiece and determine if it is the right mouthpiece for you.
- Although not guaranteed with any specific life span the Zyppah should last a year with proper care and use.
- The Zyppah does not offer any kind of incremental adjustment for its lower tray. This feature can, however, be found in other devices –for example the VitalSleep.
- It doesn’t carry the same kind of cost-effectiveness of comparable devices.
- Fitting is somewhat more cumbersome than other mouthpieces, with no trays to help guide your teeth into place. The instructions advise the use of a mirror to help with the fitting.
- As with all new mouthpieces some users will experience mild to moderate tenderness and pain in the mouth, teeth and jaw as the device beds in.
Real Customer Reviews
One commenter, as you can read from the review below, was very pleased with the device, as was his wife.
Here’s an excerpt:
“While this device pretty much stopped my snoring, it by no means is cure for Apnea. Obviously, I’m here. My wife actually sleeps now. It’s was mostly for her. I’ve been using it for almost 7 months now. I’m used to it.To be fair, it has stopped the out loud, OMG, what is that noise, snoring and by extension, reduced my OSA–somewhat. I still can’t sleep on my back indefinitely. But on my side, oh yeah. BIG difference…I also occasionally grind my teeth (Bruxism). It has helped with that too. What really makes this thing “work”, is the rubber band (and that’s all it is) which keeps the back of the tongue from either falling back or sealing off your air way…Otherwise, it keeps my wife happy. It does a little for me.”
Conclusion and Final Remarks.
The ZYPPAH is easily one of my favorite anti-snoring products. I am confident that this device can help solve your snoring problems and get you, and those around you, an excellent night’s sleep.
Its qualities are best summed up by the phrase boasted on its elegant and impressively packed delivery box: 8 hours of sleep and 0 of snoring.
It’s true that it is a bit on the pricey side and lacks a recessed tray that would ease the process of custom fitting and of course it doesn’t have what I feel could really make the Rx unbeatable: Adjustability.
But let’s not kid ourselves it is a great device, one that combines two technologies to help tackle your snoring with a double-pronged approach. Plus, its design makes it less obtrusive and more comfortable and does not make the wearer look comical.
Weighing both the pros and cons of the Zyppah , I recommend this product to you as a solid solution that efficiently works to help reduce or stop your snoring. If it were adjustable and more cost-effective I’d be happy to crown it as my favorite MAD but for now it’ll have to stay in third place behind the VitalSleep and the GMSS.
My Rating: 3.0
Which Product Should I Buy?
With well over 100 products on the market it can obviously be quite daunting to decide, “Which one?”
To help ease the decision process I have created a comparison chart where you can effortlessly assess each product and its features, price, pros and cons. I have also written several detailed reviews for those devices that I believe to be leading products.
If you would rather not spend a lot of time reading reviews, please take a look at the article linked here: My Mouthpiece Recommendation. It’s a list of three products which I believe, based on my extensive experience, are the best options available to people who suffer from snoring.
